  A banda foi formada em 1979 em São Francisco, Califórnia por Kirk Hammett, Tom Hunting, Paul Baloff, Gary Holt e Geoff Andrews. Logo em 1982,lançaram sua primeira demo Whipping Queen and Death and Domination. Em 1983 Kirk Hammett foi convidado a se juntar ao Metallica (para o lugar de Dave Mustaine) e foi substituído por Rick Hunolt, Geoff Andrews foi substituído por Rob McKillop e em 1985 a banda assinou com gravadora Combat para lançar seu primeiro álbum, chamado Bonded by Blood que rapidamente tornou-se um clássico do thrash metal. Durante os shows de divulgação do álbum, foi filmado um show e a Combat lançou o vídeo "Ultimate Revenge I", que tinha além deles, um show do Slayer e um do Venom.
