Originalmente conhecido como Legacy, o Testament é um dos fundadores do então chamado movimento Thrash da Bay-Area de meados dos anos 80. No início foi criticada por assemelhar-se muito ao Metallica mas mesmo assim o grupo se destacou na cena bay area. Seus dois primeiros álbuns são clássicos do Thrash metal.
